VUB recreates human liver in a Petri dish

Dr Milos Mihajlovic and his colleagues from Professor Mathieu Vinken's research group at VUB are creating a sophisticated human liver model to gain insight into how artificial nutrition, such as parenteral nutrition, contributes to liver damage. Although this type of nutrition is necessary for seriously ill patients to survive, it can cause significant damage to the liver in the long term. The aim of this research is to minimise the risk of liver damage associated with artificial nutrition.
